Leavenworth, Kan.--Spire Women's basketball delivered Southwestern a huge loss this evening at home in the Ryan Sports Center with a final score of 81-45 for USM after a huge second half that propelled the Spires to the big dub.
In the opening quarter,
Keely Barnard set the pace with an early jumper, followed by a three-pointer from
Saige Grampsas. The Spires secured a 5-point lead with notable teamwork and a strategic play in the paint by
Mary Olson, assisted by Grampsas. They concluded the first quarter ahead, 19-17. The second saw the Spires enhancing their defense with multiple blocks, particularly from Olson, and consistent scoring that sent them into halftime with a score of 38-33.
The intensity escalated quickly in the third period, highlighted by Olson's continued defensive strengths and a fast-break layup from
Addison Tower. Grampsas added significant value with three three-pointers, pushing the lead to 20 points and closing the period at 57-42. Heading into the final quarter of play, the Spires capitalized on their robust bench strengths, with
Juliana Walker hitting an exciting 3-pointer. Barnard's crucial jump shots further extended their lead, culminating in the hefty final score favoring the Spires, 81-45.
Top performers included
Keely Barnard, who was the game's leading scorer with 21 points, and
Saige Grampsas with 16 points and also being highlighted for her multiple assists and rebounds at 6 apiece.
Mary Olson also made substantial contributions with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. The final challenge for the Spires before a quick Thanksgiving break will be the Columbia College Cougars on Tuesday, November 25
th at 7:00 p.m., at home in the Ryan Sports Center, where they hope to build on their current record of 5-2 (2-1 in conference).
