Leavenworth, Kan.—Spire basketball faced a tough non-con game against the Columbia College Cougars on Tuesday, November 25th at the Ryan Sports Center. Despite a strong start and a close game at the half, the Spires fell to the Cougars with a final score of 80-64.
The night opened with the Spires taking an early lead, highlighted by what was a huge performance from sophomore
Addison Tower—who would go on to nail six 3-pointers—contributing significantly for USM. Saint Mary saw themselves on top at the end of the first quarter with a score of 22-19, thanks to hustle plays including a timely layup from
Abby Wendte, assisted by
Saige Grampsas. However, the tides turned in the second quarter when the Cougars came back strong, recapturing the lead and finishing the first half ahead at 39-35.
The third quarter saw Columbia heat up, extending their lead significantly, as the Spires couldn't seem to get their footing as we started the 4
th and final quarter of play down 64-42. The 4
th was marked by USM's intense defensive pressure and sharp shooting from
Keely Barnard, Tower and Wendte. Despite gritty efforts from the Spires to reclaim control along with Tower's 25 points and Wendts's 18 points, the Cougars maintained their lead through the final period, securing the win at 80-64.
Key performances for the Spires included
Addison Tower, who topped the scoring with 25 points, and
Saige Grampsas, who led in assists with 6 on the evening.
Abby Wendte also made notable contributions across the board with 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block to go along with her 18.
Looking ahead, the Spires take a quick Thanksgiving break, then hit the road to Emporia, Kansas in an exhibition against the Emporia State Hornets on Sunday November 30
th at Emporia State University. USM will then be back at home for regular season action on Monday, December 1
