Leavenworth, Kan.—On a rainy afternoon at Berkel Memorial Stadium the USM Spires men's soccer suffered a heartbreaker against the Sterling College Warriors in a Senior Day match-up on Saturday, October 25th. The Spires fell short with a 2-1 loss to the Warriors.
During the first half, the Spires showed a resilient defensive posture, navigating the slick field conditions. Sterling opened the scoring with Jonathan Torres finding the net at 20:03. The Spires answered back just before the break at 44:41, as
Robin Van Voorst capitalized on a well-placed assist from senior
Isha Hughan to equalize the score at 1-1 going into halftime.
The second half began with the Spires seeking to maintain momentum, but Sterling quickly regained the lead. At 50:17, Ruben Guzman scored, pushing Sterling ahead. USMs efforts to respond were stymied by Sterling's robust defense and steady goalkeeping by Cassidy Kelly. Despite multiple attempts on goal by Hughan, Castro, and Van Voorst, the Spires could not secure a second equalizer.
Spire goalie,
Angel Jacinto, along with the USM defense, faced significant pressure throughout the match. The game concluded with a final score of Sterling 2-1 Saint Mary, marking only the third conference victory for the Warriors where Ruben Guzman's goal proved decisive. Looking ahead, the Spires are set to face the Evangel University Valor on Wednesday, October 29th, at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. USM currently holds a record of 6-8-2 and 4-6-1 in KCAC play.
