Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team hosted the Friends Falcons in the second round of the KCAC Postseason Tournament on Saturday, resulting in an 88-63 win. The Spires are now 25-5 overall on the year and have advanced into the tournament finals for the second consecutive year.
Demi Aamold opened the scoring for Saint Mary with a three-point shot in the first minute of play. A layup from Pauge Pendley and a three from Tanea Sims gave the Spires a 10-6 lead that they would not lose throughout the rest of the game. Saint Mary hit four threes in the last three minutes of the first quarter to take a 22-8 lead over the Falcons. Pendley helped retain the momentum in the second quarter, hitting a layup and getting fouled for the and-one. Rebecca Gilpin hit back-to-back threes, and Keely Barnard followed with another to give the Spires a comfortable 40-22 lead over Friends. Saint Mary continued to score right up to halftime with a 45-24 lead.
Delgado hit a three right out of the break that started a 9-2 scoring run for the Spires. Aamold hit another three late in the third quarter, which was followed by a layup from Delgado to give Saint Mary a 23-point lead heading into the fourth. Sims scored seven of the first nine points for USM to open the quarter. The Spires continued their high offensive output, keeping the lead out of reach for the Falcons. Saint Mary cruised to an 88-63 lead, punching their ticket for the second year in a row to the KCAC Tournament Championship game.
