Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team played against Friends University tonight, resulting in a 60-58 win. The Spires are now 7-17 overall and 3-15 in conference play.
After Friends jumped out to a 4-1 start, Deshaud St. Martin scored six straight points to give the Spires their second lead of the game. The Falcons, however, responded with a 6-0 run themselves to take a 12-7 lead. After a Saint Mary timeout, the Spires got right back to work. Following a layup from Joey Schultz to make the score 12-9, St. Martin scored 14 of the Spire's next 16 points to head into halftime, leading the Falcons 25-20.
Saint Mary extended their lead coming out of halftime as Luke Mackey and Quentin Williams nailed early shots. St. Martin continued his dominance while Schultz also made a jumper to put the Spires up 11 and force a Friends timeout. With five minutes left to go in the half, the Falcons cut the Spire lead to 4. Braylen Duncan then killed the Falcon momentum with a quick Three points to get the Spires back on track. Friends refused to go away as another scoring run to tie the game at 58 with 52 seconds left. After a missed three-pointer by Williams, the Falcons had no choice but to foul Duncan with six seconds left, sending him to the free-throw line. Duncan buried both free throws to make the score 60-58. After the free throws, the Spires got the big defensive stop to earn the 60-58 win. St. Martin recorded another double-double tonight, scoring a season-high 32 points and having 12 rebounds as well.
