Men's Basketball Drops to KWU 80-68

Salina, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball traveled to face Kansas Wesleyan University, resulting in an 80-68 loss. The men's team is now 6-18 overall and 2-16 in the KCAC.

The Spires started strong, with Quentin Williams scoring the first points of the game. Following that, the spires had back-to-back threes by Joey Schultz and Luke Mackey. The Spires were up 16-14 midway through the first half. After the first time out by the Coyotes, the Spires played with aggression, Schultz had a block in the paint, and Blake Chadwick followed that up with a steal on the next defensive possession. This allowed Saint Mary to build their biggest lead of the game, at 22- 18. There were constant lead changes throughout the first half, and the Spires trailed 32-28 going into halftime. Hold the number 12 team in the nation to just 32 points in the first half.

Saint Mary fought back and forth for the lead after halftime. On a fast break, Braylen Duncan had a quick fadeaway outside of the paint. Midway through the half, Saint Mary was down by 12, and Schultz continued to attack the basket. After that, Schultz had an unguarded dunk causing a shift in the momentum of the game. The Spires trailed by 14 as Duncan sank with a reverse layup around his defender. With just over four minutes left, St. Martin had a fast break layup and was able to knock down his free throw cutting the Coyote's lead to 10. However, the spires were unable to come back, losing 80-68. St. Martin led the team in points with 18, and he was eight for ten in free throws, which added to the team total of 72% from the line.
