YORK, Neb. – The University of Saint Mary volleyball team played York College in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon and swept both matches by scores of 3-0.
Saint Mary moves to an even 9-9 overall and KCAC record.
In the first match, Saint Mary fell behind early a bit in the first set but was able to retake the lead going up 20-15. They then outscored the Panthers 5-1 the rest of the frame and took the first set 25-16 after a kill from Emma Prothe. The Spires took that same momentum into the second set and held a 20-17 lead before scoring five straight points to take a 2-0 advantage. The third set was much of the same as they earned a 25-22 win.
The second match continued to be positive for Saint Mary. In the first set the Spires found themselves down 20-18, but went on a 7-0 run to take the set. Haydan Heuermann, Jessica Malizzi and Hannah Vanriette all earned kills during the run. Saint Mary held another slight advantage in the second set at 13-9 before a few errors by York and some Spire kills boosted their lead to 21-9. Vanriette earned a kill and two Panthers' errors led to the Spires taking the second set 25-12.
Saint Mary once again found themselves in great position in the third and final set. Leading by just three points at 13-10, Rylee Kenitzer slammed down a kill before a few errors from the Panthers gave the Spires a 17-10 lead. York faced match point at 24-15 before committing one of their several errors to give the Spires a 25-15 set win.
Malizzi led the Spires with 25 kills on the night and Kenitzer had 24. Heuermann continued her dominance at the setter position posting assist numbers of 40 and 39, while Keishla Reyes had 36 digs.
