Volleyball Stays Hot, Wins Seventh Straight

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Another solid outing took place Thursday night for the University of Saint Mary volleyball team as they completed their seventh straight victory against Southwestern College, sweeping the Moundbuilders 3-0. The Spires have now won 18 straight sets dating back to March 13.

Saint Mary is 10-9 overall and 10-9 in the KCAC this season.

Saint Mary found an early spark going up 12-4 in the first set after a service ace from Emma Prothe. They later reached 20 points in the frame after a kill from Hannah Vanriette before taking the set 25-16. In the second set, the Moundbuilders kept things close midway through trailing 12-11. Rylee Kenitzer however, would cap off an 8-4 run for the Spires after a kill and the Spires held off a comeback winning 25-18.

Southwestern would take the early advantage in the third set leading 7-3, but Saint Mary climbed back in it – taking a 10-9 lead after a Moundbuilders attacking error. The Spires managed to break away down the stretch closing the set on a 5-3 run to take it 25-22.

Kenitzer and Vanriette led the team with 10 kills apiece, while Haydan Heuermann added 28 assists. Camryn Hoover would chip in 15 digs and Keishla Reyes added 14.

Saint Mary is scheduled to travel to Wichita, Kan. on Saturday for a tri match against Friends and Tabor. The first match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
