Volleyball Stays Hot, Sweeps York

YORK, Neb. – It was another solid night for the University of Saint Mary volleyball squad as they posted a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-21) sweep over York College at the Freeman Center Wednesday night, extending their winning streak to nine matches.

The Spires are now 18-7 overall and 4-0 in the KCAC, sitting in a two-way tie for first place with Ottawa University.

Saint Mary jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, but York kept pace. The Spires later climbed ahead 22-13 after a flurry of errors from the Panthers. Jessica Malizzi and Cali Odom closed out the set with a kill each, to give the team a 25-16 win.

Another early breakout in the second set gave the Spires a 3-0 advantage with kills from Malizzi and Anna Hester. The lead bounced back and forth between three and seven points for the Spires, before they extended it to double-digits and eventually won 25-14. York would take an early 6-2 lead in the final frame, but the lead for the Panthers would diminish later. Cody Offerle, Stephanie Reichenberger and Hester gave the squad a 15-14 lead as they fought back from the deficit.

Saint Mary would lead 23-21 with two points to go and converted with kills from Ashley Van Gieson and Reichenberger to claim a 25-21 win.

Malizzi recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Odom also notched 10 kills for the Spires, while Haydan Heuermann totaled a team high 21 assists. Keishla Reyes led the team with 18 digs.
