Volleyball Crushes SC, Reaches 10 Straight Wins

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Another solid night for the University of Saint Mary volleyball team put them at an astounding 10 straight wins as they swept Southwestern College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-16) tonight inside the Ryan Sports Center, to also stay undefeated at home at 6-0.

The Spires are now 19-7 overall and 5-0 in the KCAC, moving a game ahead of Ottawa University for first place.

Saint Mary built a huge 19-9 lead in the first set before taking the set 25-14 after a string of attacking errors by the Moundbuilders. A close start to set two would keep SC within reach, but the Spires went on an 8-3 run and led 20-12. The struggles would continue for Southwestern as Saint Mary was advantageous and won the set 25-13, after five straight attacking errors.

With Saint Mary leading 10-9 in the final set, Aly Camacho and Anna Hester each earned kills and later took a 15-10 lead. Southwestern trimmed the deficit to three, but the Spires would roll onto the set win as Jessica Malizzi and Cody Offerle scored two of the final three points.

Hester led the Spires with 10 kills and Haydan Heuermann recorded a team leading 17 assists. Three different Spires had double-digit digs in Keishla Reyes (17), Malizzi (14) and Ashley Van Gieson (11).
