LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team pulled out a 69-58 win over York College Thursday night inside the Ryan Sports Center, earning a season sweep of the Panthers. After a fast start for the Spires, continued to dominate and fended off any sort of comeback from York.
Saint Mary is now 5-15 overall and 4-13 in the KCAC.
The Spires came with high intensity and shot the ball well early, jumping out to a 16-7 lead after Dakota Corle and Jaleia Rice scored back-to-back baskets. The Spires continued to dominate throughout the game, including holding York to an 0-for-5 outing in the second quarter from three-point range. Rice, Tiani White and Danielle Cassady combined for a 10-4 run for the Spires as they led 38-24 with 1:27 left. Saint Mary would later take a 10-point lead into the locker room at 38-28.
Saint Mary continued its dominance in the third quarter as they led by as many as 21 points in the game. York cut the deficit to as little as seven with 3:29 left in the game, but the Spires fended off the comeback attempt by the Panthers – as White scored the final seven points for Saint Mary, including a basket and and-one opportunity at the charity stripe.
White led the Spires with 20 points, while Paige Scheckel added 14. Lexi Schamberger, Cassady and Rice each pitched in eight points for the Spires. Amaia Diaz finished with 10 points for the Panthers.
