LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary volleyball team swept Bethel College Wednesday night in three straight sets inside the Ryan Sports Center, in an all-around cohesive performance. Two Spires in Cody Offerle and Angela Wade each had double-digit kills with 12 and 10 respectively.
The Spires are now 8-7 overall and 1-0 in the KCAC on the season.
GAME FLOW
Saint Mary found themselves ahead 17-9 in the first set before going up 23-15, after a service ace from Bianca Asheim and attacking error by the Threshers. Bethel would inch closer in the set – scoring six straight points, but the Spires held them off, winning the set 25-22.
The second set was close for a small amount of time, before the Spires went on an 11-4 run and led 21-12. Both teams traded points, but Saint Mary would take a 2-0 match lead – winning 25-17. Saint Mary held a thin 14-10 lead in the third set, but controlled the tempo throughout. Wade earned a kill, while Asheim and Ashlie Van Gieson scored points for the Spires. Saint Mary led 19-13 at the time.
The Spires later closed the match with a kill from Van Gieson and service ace from Offerle, to end the third set at 25-18.
KEY STATISTICS
- Saint Mary had 42 kills on the night, compared to 23 for Bethel.
- Bailey Wright and Van Gieson each tallied double-digit assists with 17 and 15 respectively.
- Three Spires had double-digit digs in Katy Koepke (12), Wright (10) and Adeline Pagan-Sanchez (10).
- Saint Mary also added seven total blocks led by two solo blocks from Aly Camacho.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SPIRES
Saint Mary will travel to Point Lookout, Mo. to play four matches between Friday and Saturday. The Spires take on Saint Louis College of Pharmacy and York College on Friday, before facing College of the Ozarks and No. 3 ranked Columbia College on Saturday.
