SEWARD, Neb. – The University of Saint Mary volleyball team split two matches Saturday on the site of Concordia University (Neb.), defeating Benedictine College (Kan.) 3-1 and falling to Valley City State University (N.D.).
The Spires are now 4-4 on the season.
GAME FLOW (Benedictine College)
The Spires played a tough first set against the Ravens, as they were able to pull out a 28-26 first set win. Benedictine would take the second set 25-18, but the rest of the match was all Saint Mary. The Spires would take the third set 25-16, followed by another 25-16 set win as the Spires survived a late push from the Ravens.
Cody Offerle led the Spires with 14 kills. Ashley Van Gieson and Bailey Wright combined for 51 assists with 28 and 23 respectively.
GAME FLOW (Valley City State University)
Saint Mary fell behind in the first set at 10-7, but climbed back in it going on a 12-3 run to take a 19-13 lead. Valley City State however, went on a run and would clinch the first set by a small margin of 26-24. Valley City State took the second set 25-15 to go up 2-0 in the match, but Saint Mary pulled out a three-point set win in the third set, 25-22.
Saint Mary trailed by just three points at 11-8 in the fourth set, but could not overcome the Vikings run as they won the set 25-15.

The Spires will take a trip to Columbia, Mo. to take on Stephens College on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
