The Spires volleyball team battled through a closely contested match against the Doane University Tigers, ultimately falling with a final score of 2-3.
The match was intense from the start. The Spires began the first set with energy, but were overpowered by the Tigers with a score of 18-25. In a remarkable turnaround, USM claimed the second set 25-14, showcasing their resilience and tactical play. However, the third set saw another dip as the Spires lost 20-25. Not ready to give up, Saint Mary came back strong to win the fourth set 25-20, tying the overall score. The final set, crucial and gripping, ended in defeat for the Spires with a score of 10-15, giving the win to Doane.
Despite the loss, individual performances were noteworthy.
MJ Stephens led with 16 kills, followed by
Saige Hadley with 12, and
Emma Scalise with 9. On the defensive side, Scalise along with
Sophia Frerking and
Makenza Holly, each blocked 2 attempts.
Gabby Kurle led the digs with 18, amid a strong defensive effort from the team. The serving game saw
MJ Stephens with 3 aces, helping to keep the Spires competitive.
Looking forward, USM is set to face Benedictine College at home on Tuesday September 9th at 7:00 p.m. in Ryan Sports Center in Leavenworth, Kansas.
