Point Lookout, Mo.—The USM Spires women's basketball squad opened their 2025-2026 season against an aggressive opponent in the College of the Ozarks on Saturday, November 1
st at Point Lookout, Missouri. Despite a strong start, the Spires were unable to hold onto their early lead, ultimately falling 91-70 to their opponents.
The game kicked off with the Spires taking the initiative, as
Summer Wieneke scored the first points with a jumper, quickly followed by multiple three-pointers from
Addison Tower, pushing Saint Mary to an early advantage. Tower's sharp shooting helped the team to a 10-point lead during the first period, ending it slightly ahead at 23-21.
However, the second quarter saw a shift in momentum with College of the Ozarks' Logan Jones and Allyssa Joyner taking charge with key jumpers to take over the lead. Their effective defense led to turnovers, allowing them to end the half leading 47-39.
The third quarter intensified for the Spires as College of the Ozarks continued to dominate, particularly through Keara Mattingley's scoring and Avery Arnold's defensive strengths. The period concluded with College of the Ozarks expanding their lead to 76-54.
In the fourth and final quarter, College of the Ozarks maintained their control, ultimately securing a 91-70 victory. Despite the loss, notable performances for the Spires included
Addison Tower's 17 points and
Saige Grampsas' all-around contribution leading USM in assists (5) and rebounds (4).
Looking ahead, the Spires will compete in their home opener against Graceland University on Tuesday, November 4
th at Ryan Sports Center in Leavenworth with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
