Sterling, Kan.—The Spires came home victorious on Saturday, November 1
st after a Bissell division face-off between USM and the Sterling College Warriors in Sterling, Kansas. The Spires clinched a nail-biting victory with a final score of 34-27.
USM kicked off strongly in the first half with a spirited touchdown by freshman
Kameron Smith. Sterling swiftly responded with their own touchdown by Rocklin Baptist, setting the tone for a competitive game. As the first half progressed, the Spires solidified their lead with
Michael Gazzana catching a 22-yard pass for a touchdown from freshman quarterback
Garrett Hunnicutt.
Kameron Smith's second touchdown rush and another successful reception by
Michael Gazzana further stretched the Spires' lead, reflected in the halftime score of 27-7 in favor of the Spires.
The second half saw Sterling attempting a spirited comeback, narrowing the lead of USM. However, the Spires managed to maintain their composure, teamwork and overall control of the game. A few critical moments came in the final quarter when Sterling continued to advance, but a crucial 40-yard touchdown rush by
Teralle Watson secured the victory for the Spires.
Individual performances were noteworthy with
Michael Gazzana contributing significantly with two touchdowns and 78 receiving yards. Quarterback
Garrett Hunnicutt also made his mark by passing for 60 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive line,
Amari Akins recorded four significant tackles, while
Degeorge Hudson intercepted two key passes, playing a central role in stalling Sterling's offensive drives.
The Spires, now holding a season record of 3-6, will face the #18 ranked Southwestern College Moundbuilders on Saturday, November 8
th at home in Berkel Memorial Stadium with a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.
