Skiatook, Okla.--In an electrifying season opener, the University of Saint Mary Spires edged out the Langston University Lions with a tight score of 71-69 on Friday, October 31st at Skiatook, Oklahoma. The last time USM and Langton met, was Friday, March 14
th in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round where the Lions ended what was a hugely successful and exciting 2024-2025 season for the Spires.
The first period of play showed early dominance by the Spires, initiated by a swift 3-pointer from
Damare Smith. Alongside Smith,
Kaeden Bonner notably contributed with long-range shots, helping the team to amass a 10-point lead midway through the period. Despite their efforts, the Lions managed a comeback, finishing the first half ahead with a score of 34-31.
The second period was characterized by its intensity, physical Spire defense, and multiple lead changes, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.
Terrius Walker's crucial free throws and
Cam Edwards' vital jumper marked turning points for the Spires. The highlight moment came when
Kaeden Bonner, who was the game's top scorer with 16 points, secured the win with a decisive free throw, concluding the game at a narrow 71-69 in favor of the Spires.
