Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Volleyball team played Haskell Indian Nations University on Wednesday night, resulting in the Spires winning in straight sets (25-23) (25-19) (25-17). The Spires are now 10-4 overall on the season.
After a kill by Madison Folsom gave the Spires some early momentum, Haskell responded with back-to-back kills of their own to take the lead. Camryn Wessel and Keagan Shockley retook the lead with back-to-back kills to go up 11-10. As Saint Mary was looking to pull away, the Fightin' Indians went on a run to cut the USM lead to 22-20. Shockley later slammed the door on Haskell to seal the 25-23 win.
Rylee Kenitzer and Shockley gave the Spires momentum early on in set two, but the Haskell rallied with two different scoring runs during the set. One of these runs allowed the Fightin' Indians to tie the game up, forcing the Spires to take a timeout. After four straight kills by Saint Mary to go up 19-13, the Indians went on their second run, cutting the Spire lead to four points. However, a service error by the Indians and a final kill by Renata Dominguez gave Saint Mary the 25-19 win.
The Spires led a majority of the final set as Kenitzer tallied five big kills while Devyn Ford and Rebecca Sprague both added key kills of their own to eventually pull away for the 25-17 win, completing their second sweep of the day. Ava Bojanski led defensively with 21 digs, Courtney Standley led with 23 assists, and Shockley recorded 11 kills on the night.
