Columbia, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Volleyball team traveled to play Columbia College on Wednesday, resulting in a 3-1 loss. The Spires are now 4-2 overall on the season.
After Saint Mary took an early 3-2 lead in the first set, the Cougars went on a 7-1 run to make it 9-4. Errors by Columbia allowed the Spires to stay within striking distance of the Cougars. However, another momentum-swinging run by Columbia put Saint Mary down 18-9. A block from Rylee Kenitzer and Devyn Ford and a service ace from Macey Adams helped the Spires chip away at the growing Cougars lead, but the Cougars ultimately took set one by a score of 25-18. The second set was neck and neck from start to finish. A service ace by Gabby Kurle and key kills by Kegan Shockley and Madison Folsom led to a 25-25 tie. Rebecca Sprague and Folsom then came up big for the Spires with their kills to earn the 27-25 win.
Saint Mary started the third set quickly, gaining an early 2-0 advantage. The Cougars then got going with back-and-forth action to the final stretch. Errors by Saint Mary and kills by Columbia sealed the victory for the Cougars 25-19. The fourth and final set featured two key scoring runs for Columbia. The Spires were able to come back from being down 15-8 but could not come back for a second time as Columbia took set four, 25-18.
