Spires Comeback to Win 62-49 Over Friends

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team took on the Friends University Falcons, resulting in a 62-49 win. The Spires are now 15-9 overall and 11-7 in the KCAC.

Saint Mary and Friend's started the game great offensively as back-and-forth action highlighted the first quarter. Jerrica Johnson hit an early three-pointer to give the Spires the lead, but Friends responded with a three of their own. With 15 seconds left in the quarter, Mary Olson sunk two big free throws to cut the Falcon lead to 14-13. The second quarter started with a Friends scoring run but ended with Saint Mary scoring run. Friends started the quarter with a 14-0 scoring run to take a 29-13 lead. However, Saint Mary did not back down as they ended the quarter on an 11-0 run highlighted by Rebecca Gilpin's three-pointer and Olson's layup. The Spires went into halftime trailing 29-24.

The Falcons jumped out to a 9-point lead to begin the second half, but the Spires refused to lay down. Alanis Delgado scored ten of the Spire's first 12 points and she scored 13 total points in the third quarter. Paige Pendley and Demi Aamold also hit big shots to eventually give the Spires the lead with three minutes left to go in the quarter. With 24 seconds left, Delgado nailed another three to make the score 47-39. The fourth quarter featured great defensive play for Saint Mary as they never allowed the Falcons to get back in the game to secure the 62-49 win. Delgado had a team-high 15 points, while Pendley and Olson both had four rebounds to lead the team.

Saint Mary will travel to play Kansas Wesleyan at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Salina, Kansas.
