Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team took on the Avila Eagles for Senior Night, resulting in a 72-51 win. The Spires are now 16-10 overall and 12-8 in the KCAC.
After Saint Mary started fast with a layup from Paige Pendley to give the Spires the early lead. Jerrica Johnson then went on a roll to score the next seven points for Saint Mary. Kaylani Hoskin helped the Spires close the quarter with a layup to take a 15-10 lead. Hoskin then got things started for the Spires in the second with another layup to extend the lead. Great defensive play by Saint Mary held the Eagles to just 10 points in the quarter as the Spires went into halftime leading 36-20.
Alex Specht and Pendley got the Spires rolling early, scoring the team's first five points. After the Eagles went on an 8-0 run, Saint Mary responded with a 6-0 run to end the quarter with a 51-34 lead. The fourth quarter was highlighted by big threes from Alanis Delgado and Rebecca Gilpin to keep the momentum on the Spire's side. There was not much more the Eagles could do as the Saint Mary defense closed the game out for the 72-51 win on senior night. Specht led the way for USM, recording a double-double, scoring 13 points, and grabbing 11 rebounds.
