Salina, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team traveled to take on the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes on Saturday, resulting in a 71-64 loss. The Spires are now 5-7 overall and 1-5 in the KCAC.
The Coyotes got out in front of Saint Mary in the first half, but points from Deshaud St. Martin Tysen Brennan kept them close. As play continued, Kansas Wesleyan went on an 8-3 scoring run to build an 18-8 lead over the Spires. Back-to-back three from Quentin Williams helped cut into the grown KWU lead with six minutes left in the half. Brennan and Mason Belcher score the final points of the half for Saint Mary to make it a 33-21 game.
After the break, St. Martin and Blake Chadwick attempted to take the momentum from the Coyotes but could not, as they remained down by ten points. Around the eight-minute mark, Mason Belcher sparked a scoring run for the Spires, who came within nine after a three from Demarius Houston made it a nine-point game. From there, the Spires continued to score, and free throws from Joey Schultz made it a four-point game. However, late turnovers and missed shots prevented the Spires from completing the comeback against the Coyotes. St. Martin led Saint Mary in scoring on the night with 15 points, while he and Chadwick combined for 14 rebounds.
