Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's basketball team hosted Friends University for a matchup of two undefeated KCAC teams. The Spires came away victorious, winning 83-58, and are now 7-2 overall on the year and 5-0 in conference play.
Saint Mary could not have had a better start to the game, jumping out to a 10-0 lead. Threes from Demi Aamold and Keely Barnard gave the Spires made it a 16-0 game with just under three minutes to go in the quarter. Barnard and Alyche Brown each got one more three to take a 25-2 heading into the second quarter. Alanis Delgado hit a three to help Saint Mary pick up where they left off. Friends began to chip away at the Spire's significant lead to make it a 15-point game with time winding down in the half. Katelynn Ostronic strung four points together as time expired to make it 41-23 heading into the break.
The Spires came out of the half with all the momentum and continued to hit threes and keep the Falcons out of striking distance. A three from Paige Pendley gave Saint Mary a 20-point lead midway through the third quarter. Friends could not match the offensive output of the Spires, who held a 61-40 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Falcons cut into the Saint Mary lead, opening the final frame with a 10-3 scoring run. However, the Spires were able to regain some of the lost momentum and finished the quarter strong, winning 83-58. Barnard led the team offensively with 18 points, going five for nine from behind the three-point line.
