Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team played the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles Wednesday, resulting in a 74-58 loss. The Spires are now 5-10 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
Joey Schultz got the Spires going to open the game by scoring the first six out of ten points for Saint Mary. Things stayed very tight throughout the first half, with eleven different lead changes. A layup from Deshaud St. Martin gave the Spires a three-point lead heading into the final five minutes of the half. The Eagles then went on an 11-point scoring run and had an eight-point lead with three minutes to go. Schultz and Braylen Duncan made two important shots just before halftime to keep Saint Mary within striking distance, being down 34-26 heading into the half.
The Spires were able to start the second half off strong, much like the first. A jump shot from Duncan and two free throws from Quentin Williams made the score 34-30 in favor of the Eagles. Just before the midway mark of the half, Oklahoma Wesleyan had another extended scoring run that gave them a comfortable 18-point lead. However, with time winding down, the Spires went on one last run to try and take the lead from the Eagles. Going on a 15-2 run and hitting three three-pointers, Saint Mary cut the lead to just six points. Oklahoma Wesleyan had an answer and shut the door on the Spires with one final run of their own, making the final score 74-58. Schultz led the team with 15 points, while Duncan was right behind him with 14 points and eight rebounds.
