Lawrence, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Volleyball took on Haskell Indian Nations University today, which resulted in a three-set win (25-21, 25-11, 25-18). The Spires are now 11-9 and 1-1 in conference play heading into a matchup with Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Saturday in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
The Spires went down 4-9 early in set 1 but quickly regrouped with kills by Rebecca Sprauge, Keagan Shockley, and Devyn Ford. The offensive pressure helped Saint Mary come back to tie the game at 15. Ainsley Gardner and Michelle Dvorak added to the lead with kills of their own while Emma Prothe helped finish the first set with a service ace to give the Spires a 25-21 win.
Saint Mary put all the pressure on the Indians, going on a 9-1 run to start the second set. Rylee Kenitzer and Ford had multiple kills to help the Spires take a comfortable lead. Renata Dominguez and Shockley also had kills down the stretch as they cruised to a 25-11 victory.
The Spires got off to another fast start as they opened the set with another extended run and took a 6-0 lead. Haskell would battle back to make the score 13-11, but Saint Mary shut the door with another impressive run, highlighted by Maggie Anderson's service ace and Gardner kills. They gave the Spires all they needed to close out the Indians and secure the 25-18 win. Ford and Gardner led the team with 12 kills apiece, while Haydan Heuermann led with 20 assists on the night.
