Spires Fall to Benedictine in Three Sets

Atchison, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Volleyball team took on Benedictine College Tuesday night, losing in three sets, 10-25, 20-25, and 19-25. The Spires are now 8-5 heading into the weekend tournament in Ottawa, Kansas.

Saint Mary struggled to get much going for set one as the Ravens jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The highlight of the first set was Rylee Kenitzer, Devyn Ford, and Keagan Shockley, all accounting for kills. The Spires were determined in the second set as they got off to a quick start thanks to a few kills from Ford and Michelle Dvorak. Saint Mary looked to be in control, leading 17-13, until an eight-point Benedictine run stopped all momentum for the Spires. That was all the Ravens needed as they took set two by a score of 25-20.

The final set was set up to look like a back-and-forth thriller until Benedictine had another extended run. The Spires clawed their way out of a 21-11 deficit with some key kills by Ford and Shockley. But it was not enough as the Ravens finished off the Spires in three sets. Haydan Heuermann led the Spires with 15 assists, while Shockley and Ford each had nine kills.
