Salina, Ks- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team traveled to Kansas Wesleyan on Friday to open their weekend series against the Coyotes. Starter Drake Pingel went all nine innings for Saint Mary and recorded nine strikeouts to help them get the win.
The Spires secured the lead early in Friday's series opener and would hold onto that lead for the remainder of the game. Saint Mary was able to capitalize on a couple of mistakes made by the Coyotes, with runners in scoring position in the third inning to go up 4-0.
Peyton Garvin got the Spires on the board when he got walked with the bases loaded, scoring one. Then, Brendan Roop would reach first after an error by the KWU third baseman to make it 2-0. Kawika Hubbell would drive in the last two runs of the inning after hitting a double down the right-field line. In the top half of the fourth, the Spires would get another run when Bryan Fuentes singled to center, and Adian Hartig was able to reach home on an error after the hit, making the score 5-0.
After the Coyotes hit a two-run home run, they would not score in the ninth inning, and the Spires would get the win 5-2. The Spires were led on offense by Hubbell who went one-for-four with two RBIs.
