Leavenworth, Ks- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team lost in a hotly contested rubber match in the series finale against Bethany College Sunday.
The Spires would give up one run in the first inning after a single by Bethany. In the second, Saint Mary would put up seven runs, Peyton Garvin hit a bases-clearing triple in the inning, and after an RBI single hit by Brendan Roop, the Spires had a 7-1 lead. However, Bethany would chip away at the lead, and by the fifth inning, the Spire's lead by only one run. Both teams would get runs in the seventh and eighth innings, as Saint Mary was in control 9-8. After a five-run top of the ninth for Bethany, the Spires found themselves down for the first time since the opening inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Saint Mary would have to score four runs to keep the game alive and force extra innings. Down to their last out, the Spires would manage to get three runs across but were not able to score the tying run and lost 13-12. Kawika Hubbell led the Spires on offense, going four for six with four RBIs and two runs.
