Lawrence, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team took on Haskell Indian Nations University Saturday, winning 88-83. The Spires now boast an 8-5 record on the year.
Saint Mary took an early lead after starting the game with a 6-1 scoring run. The Fighting Indians had answered with a strong offensive attack, and by the end of the first quarter, had a 20-11 lead. In the second quarter, back-to-back threes from Addison Penegar and Alanis Delgado helped keep the Spires within two points of Haskell. Saint Mary kept up the pressure on offense and held a 39-37 lead heading into halftime.
Jerrica Johnson opened the third quarter scoring six of the first eight points to give the Spires a seven points lead. A three from Demi Aamold made the game 51-41. As the quarter was winding down, the Fighting Indians made another run at the Saint Mary lead and went into the fourth with the Spires up 62-58. Aamold had two more threes to start the final quarter. With five minutes to go, Johnson scored 13 consecutive points to help secure the win for Saint Mary. Johnson led the Spires with 29 points, while Tanea Sims had 12 points and 13 rebounds on the night for her second double-double of the season.
