York, Neb.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team played against the York Panthers Saturday, which resulted in a 67-61 loss. The Spires are now 3-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play, heading into a matchup with Southwestern College on Tuesday.
The first half started fast for York as they got out to an early 9-0 lead. Alanis Delgado's three-pointer got the Spires on the board, but the Panthers continued to keep up the offensive production as the quarter ended with a 16-6 lead. Alex Specht, Tanea Sims, and Jerrica Johnson scored for Saint Mary to keep the Spires in it at 29-14 late in the second quarter. A couple of late scores by Delgado made the score 32-21 at halftime.
Saint Mary came out of the gate strong in the second half as they scored thirteen unanswered points to take a 34-32 lead. The Spires went back and forth with the Panthers as Chyanne Aaron helped USM tie the game at 43-43 as the third quarter ended. The fourth quarter came down to the last minute, where York eventually took the lead with little time left. Another three-pointer by Delgado brought the Spires within three, but Panther free throws closed out the game, making the final 67-61.
Delgado and Johnson combined for 43 of the team's 61 points, and Kaylani Hoskin led the spires with eight rebounds.
