Spires Beat Flacons in Four

Wichita Kan. - The University of Saint Mary Volleyball team was on the road to take on Friends University Saturday afternoon, winning in four sets 25-15, 15-25, 26-24, and 25-18. The Spires are now 16-12 overall and 4-4 in the KCAC.

The first set was close until a block by Haydan Heuermann and Devyn Ford sparked a seven-point run making the score 15-8. As the first set continued, Saint Mary grew their lead holding off any potential runs made by the Falcons as the Spires took set one 25-15.

Set two started off much like the first, with both teams trading points making it 10-10 as the middle part of the set began. Friends had a seven-point run of their own making the set 12-20. The Falcons went on to take set two 25-15 and evening the match at 1-1.

Friends came out strong in the third set starting off with a 5-2 lead before Saint Mary had a rally started by Ainsley Gardner, giving them a 6-5 lead. The Spires were able to were able to capitalize on miscues by the Falcons. The set remained close and was tied 24-24 with Saint Mary winning the next two serves securing the 26-24 win.

The Spires jumped out to a 7-1 lead with multiple kills by Rylee Kenitzer throughout the run. However, Friends came back making it a close game with a four-point run of their own. Saint Mary answered back with a five-point run taking a 12-5 lead. The Spires set up comfortably as they ended the set winning 25-18 and winning the match 3-1. Kenitzer led the Spires with 17 kills on the day while Heuermann had 38 assists.

The Spires will be at home to take on Sterling College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ryan Sports Center.
