PARKVILLE, Mo. – Haydan Heuermann reached a career milestone on Saturday, eclipsing 2,000 career assists as the University of Saint Mary volleyball team defeated Georgetown College 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 21-25, 25-16) and fell to Saint Ambrose University 3-0 (17-25, 20-25, 17-25) on the campus of Park University.
Saint Mary now stands at 5-3 on the season.
GEORGETOWN MATCH
Both teams went back and forth in the first set, tying several times. Keagan Shockley ignited a 6-0 run for the Spires with a kill as the team led 19-13. Jessica Malizzi would slam a kill and Bailey Chintala earned a service ace toward the latter part of the set as the Spires took set one 25-17. Saint Mary found themselves up by a large amount again in the second set as Heuermann got a service ace making the score 20-13. The Spires would close out the set on a 5-2 run and took it 25-15.
After Georgetown took the third set, the Spire recollected themselves and fended off the Tigers in the fourth set. Michelle Dvorak earned two kills making it 13-8 Saint Mary and the Spires eventually won the set 25-16.
SAINT AMBROSE MATCH
The Spires managed to keep pace with the Bees in set one, trailing 12-10. Saint Ambrose was able to extend their advantage however, as they took a 20-14 lead. Hannah Vanriette earned a kill and Shockley would add two later in the frame, but Saint Ambrose took set one 25-17. The Spires broke a 6-6 tie in set two with an error by the Bees and a service ace from Laney Ward. Both teams went back and forth and fought to a 15-15 tie before Saint Ambrose took the lead at 18-15. They would then ride that lead to a 25-20 set two win.
The Spires were unable to climb back in the end as Saint Ambrose would then win the third set 25-16.
Shockley led the team with 20 kills on the day and Heuermann recorded 38 assists. Mattie Dougherty added 20 digs between the two matches.
Saint Mary will take a break before hitting the road again for a non-conference match against Avila University on Wednesday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
