LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Haydan Heuermann led the University of Saint Mary volleyball team with 100 assists in the team's two matches, as the Spires defeated Mid-America Christian in five sets, 3-2 and Oklahoma Panhandle State in four sets, 3-1. MID AMERICA CHRISTIAN MATCH
The Spires fell behind early as Mid-America Christian took the first two sets. The Evangels were able to hold off the Spires in the first set, 29-27 before taking a 25-15 decisive second frame.

Saint Mary was able to claw their way back, however. With a 22-19 lead, Jessica Malizzi and Hannah Vanriette earned back-to-back kills putting them within one point of the set. A service error by the Evangels later would put the Spires in the driver seat with the 25-21 set win. Saint Mary then grabbed a big lead in the fourth set as they led 20-9, highlighted by five kills from Shockley. The Spires later led 22-15, before Rylee Kenitzer slammed a kill and Bailey Chintala closed out the set with two service aces.
The Spires maintained the momentum in the fifth set and would hold on for the 15-12 set win to complete the comeback to win in five sets.

PANHANDLE STATE MATCH
Saint Mary was the first team to find the hot hand as they took the first two sets in the match by scores of 25-18 and 25-21. The Spires faltered a bit in the third set as Panhandle State took a decisive 25-14 victory.

The Spires had a tough battle in the fourth and final set as Panhandle State tried to force a fifth set. Both teams reached 20 points and Saint Mary was able to fend off a run from the Aggies as they took the frame 25-22.

Shockley and Heuermann led the team in kills and assists, while Laney Ward had 38 digs.

The Spires cap off the KCAC Fall Fling on Saturday with an 11 a.m. first serve against Dakota Wesleyan.
