Leavenworth, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary volleyball team defeated Southwestern College Saturday evening by a score of 3-0 in the KCAC Tournament First Round.
Saint Mary is 13-12 overall.
In the first set, the Spires took the first set by a score of 25-22. The Spires would go back and forth with Southwestern both teams tailed each other neck and neck. The Spires were able to break away from Southwestern thanks to a kill by Kelsey Huggans assisted by Hayden Heuermann, 17-14. The Spires seemed to feed off this and continued to attack Southwestern. The Spires were able to win the first set, 25-22.
In the second set, the Spires fed off the first set and dominated Southwestern. Southwestern couldn't keep up with the Spires and struggled to figure out their offense. The Spires would win the second set, 25-27.
In the third set Southwestern got off to a hot start and lead the Spires, 4-1. The Spires weren't discouraged and were able to break the lead thanks to a kill by Jessica Malizzi assisted by Heuermann, 5-4. Southwestern never gave up against the Spires and continued to battle back and forth. As the game progressed the Spires were able to break away from the Mound builders. Southwestern looked to climb back toawds the end but the Spires were able to win the last set, 25-22.
Malizzi collected 15 kills and Rylee Kenitzer also had 13. Heuermann led the team with 37 assists, while Camryn Hoover led the team with 16 digs.

Saint Mary will travel Hillsboro, Kansas Thursday to take on Tabor at 7 pm.
