Volleyball Sweeps Day At OKWU Tri

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – The University of Saint Mary volleyball team fell continued their winning streak on Saturday by defeating Oklahoma Wesleyan in five sets – 3-2 and Bethel College in four sets – 3-1.

Saint Mary is 3-8 overall and 3-8 in the KCAC this season.

OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN MATCH
Oklahoma Wesleyan would take the first set at 25-17, but the Spires gained a 2-1 match advantage after taking sets two and three. The Spires won set two by a score of 25-19 before earning a narrow victory – 27-25 in the third frame. The Eagles would challenge the Spires and force a fifth set by winning 25-19. Saint Mary was then able to pick up their second straight win after breaking a 12-12 tie in the fifth set, to win 15-12.

Rylee Kenitzer led the team with 12 kills and Jessica Malizzi pitched in eight. Haydan Heuermann recorded 31 assists and Keishla Reyes added 19 digs.

BETHEL MATCH
The Spires took the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-20.

Saint Mary held a 16-13 lead in the first set, but managed to score three more points building it to 19-13 after kills from Malizzi and Hannah Vanriette. With the score later sitting at 24-18, Kenitzer closed out the set with a kill to give them the first set win. The Spires would find themselves down 17-15 in the second set, but went on a 7-0 run to lead 22-17. Bethel would score three more points in the set before Saint Mary claimed it 25-20.

Bethel would pull out the third set by a score of 25-18, but the Spires held off a comeback from the Threshers in the fourth set – taking it 25-21. Saint Mary broke a 21-21 tie to score the final four points to seal the victory.

Malizzi led the team with 17 kills and Vanriette had 12. Heuermann recorded 37 assists, while Reyes (15), Camryn Hoover (11), Heuermann (11) and Courtney Rexroat (11) all recorded double-digit digs.

UP NEXT
The Spires will be back in action at the Ryan Sports Center on Wednesday when they host Friends University at 7 p.m.
