Volleyball Goes 1-1 On Final Day Of Baker Invite

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary volleyball team split their matches Saturday at the Baker University Invitational, falling to College of Saint Mary (Neb.) 3-2 (28-26, 22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 10-15) and defeating Missouri Valley College 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21).

Saint Mary is now 8-5 overall on the season.

COLLEGE OF SAINT MARY MATCH: Both teams split the first two sets with the Spires narrowly winning set one. The Spire fell behind two sets to one after a 25-18 loss, but notched a 25-21 set win in the fourth frame to force a fifth.

Playing in another tight match, the Spires were unable to come out on top and fell 15-10.

Cody Offerle led the Spires with 17 kills, while Haydan Heuermann had 28 assists. Keishla Reyes added 23 digs.

MISSOURI VALLEY MATCH: Just like the first match, the Spires split their first two frames with the Vikings. The third set would give Saint Mary some momentum as they held on for a 25-18 win to go up 2-1 into the fourth frame.

The Spires were able to rebound in this match, as they won the fourth set by a score of 25-21.

Offerle led the way in the nightcap with another double-digit night with 15 kills. Heuermann posted25 assists along with 14 digs, while Jessica Malizzi led the team with 15 digs on the night.

Saint Mary will take some time off before traveling to Marshall, Mo. on Sept. 13-14 for the Missouri Valley Tournament. The Spires will begin play against Stephens College on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a big challenge in No. 1 Park University at 5 p.m.
