OSKALOOSA, Iowa. – The University of Saint Mary volleyball team started the Wiliam Penn University Labor Day Classic with a sweep of its opponents, defeating Governors State 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) and Mount Marty 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-19) inside the William Penn Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Spires are now 4-2 on the season.
GOVERNORS STATE MATCH: The Spires cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Governors State in their first match on Saturday. Saint Mary broke a 9-9 tie in the first set after a kill from Anna Hester. Saint Mary continued to roll grabbing a 20-15 lead after Cody Offerle spiked a kill and held off a late rally to take the set 25-21. The Spires opened the second set with a 10-5 lead as Hana Ronnebaum earned two kills, before the Jaguars cut the lead to 14-12. Saint Mary would collect five kills in a span of six points to take a 21-15 lead and won the set 25-19.
Governors State jumped out to an 8-6 lead in the final set, but the Spires went on an 8-2 run later on to take a 19-12 lead, after leading 11-10. With a 23-18 lead, the Spires would score the final two points and win the set 25-18.
Hester led the way with 10 kills and Haydan Heuermann had 16 assists.
MOUNT MARTY MATCH: Saint Mary picked up their second sweep of the day on Saturday after defeating Mount Marty in straight sets. The Spires created some separation in the first set when they went up 16-11 after a kill from Stephanie Reichenberger. Mount Marty struggled on the attacking side as they committed consecutive errors and the Spires rode onto a 25-15 win.
In the second set, Saint Mary led by three points on several occasions, but more errors occurred by the Lancers as Saint Mary took a 20-14 lead. The Lancers cut the deficit again, but the Spires would take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-20 win down the stretch. Saint Mary would cling to a small lead in the third set, but broke away for an 18-11 lead. Mount Marty would come within two points at 20-18, but Ronnebaum and Jessica Malizzi both recorded kills in the final set of points to secure the victory for the Spires.
Malizzi and Cali Odom each had six kills, while Heuermann recorded 12 assists. Keishla Reyes accumulated eight digs.
Saint Mary continues play in the William Penn Tournament tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. against William Penn and Dakota Wesleyan.
