Freeman, Saint Mary Split With Coyotes

MCPHERSON, Kan – The University of Saint Mary baseball team split its series with Kansas Wesleyan University Friday afternoon, winning 12-7 before falling 3-2 to the Coyotes in the rubber match on the campus of McPherson College. The games were originally scheduled to be played Saturday and Sunday, but were moved due to the possibility of inclement weather.

The Spires are now 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the KCAC.

In the first game of the day, both teams traded punches early. After the Spires got two runs in the first inning, Kansas Wesleyan struck for four runs in the bottom half. The Spires would retake the lead on two separate occasions in the third and fifth innings.

Saint Mary held an 8-7 lead into the eighth inning before adding four runs as insurance. Already having thrown three innings, Easton Barnes solidified the save in the ninth to shut down the Coyotes.

Matt Weis was credited with the win, while KWU's Wyatt Formo was hit with the loss.

Daunte Freeman led the offense going 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and three RBI. Oscar Osorio, Troy Hughes and David Ramirez each added two runs batted in.

The second game was tight throughout before the Spires broke through in the fifth inning with Matt Ladd adding an RBI single. Freeman would hit his second home run of the day and fourth of the year, in the seventh and final inning giving the Spires a 2-0 lead.

The Coyotes however found life in the bottom half, tying the game at two before walking off on an infield single to earn the win.

KWU's Jake Olofson was the winner on the mound. Adrian Cardenas took the loss for Saint Mary.

Freeman went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base in game two.
