Women's Basketball Falls To (12)Sterling Saturday

STERLING, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team fell to a solid (12)Sterling College team on the road Saturday night. The final score was 85-54.

The Spires start the season 1-7 overall and 1-3 KCAC.

Saint Mary got on the board early after Nese Selepeo made a pass to Dakota Corle inside the paint where she easily laid it in. Moments later, Kaylie Simmonds made another basket to put the Spires up 4-0. Sterling would quickly take the momentum and led 30-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Spires had a better second quarter, as they held Sterling to only 13 points while they scored 10 of their own. The lady Warriors led 43-23 at halftime.

The Spires would cut the lead down to 19 after four made free-throws from Macy Walker and Danielle Cassady early in the third. Though Saint Mary never backed down, the double-digit lead was too much for the Spires to overcome.

Cassady led the team with 13 points and had five assists. Rebecca Gilpin posted 11 points for the Spires, and Selepeo had 10. Walker led the team with nine rebounds. As a team, the Spires shot 80 percent from the free-throw line.
