Women's Basketball Falls To Benedictine Saturday

LEAVENWORTH, KAN. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team fell to Benedictine College 89-50 Saturday afternoon at home inside Ryan Sports Center.

The Spires are now 0-2 overall on the young season.

Benedictine got on the board first after two made free-throws and a basket before Danielle Cassady sparked an 8-0 run for the Spires going 1-for-2 at the line. On their next possession, Bridget Cassidy hit a basket and it was followed with a three-pointer made by Kaylie Simonds that gave Saint Mary the lead with 4:10 left in the first quarter. Saint Mary led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Spires struggled offensively in the second quarter and trailed 43-21 at halftime.

Saint Mary came out hot in the third and hit two back-to-back three-pointers made by Nese Selepeo and Cassady, followed by a nice basket made by Macy Walker. The Spires trailed 45-29 with 7:26 left in the third before the Ravens would take off offensively. Saint Mary would not fold over as they scored 18 points in the final quarter, but were unable to come back.

Cassady led the team with 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Walker had 10 points and five rebounds.

The Spires will take on Peru State College at home on Nov. 5 inside Ryan Sports Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
