LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – In front of another boisterous crowd at the Ryan Sports Center, the University of Saint Mary volleyball team pushed its winning streak to seven matches with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) sweep over Sterling College Tuesday night. Saint Mary has now won 21 of their last 22 sets during the run.
The Spires now sit at 16-7 overall and an unblemished 2-0 in KCAC play on the season.
The first two sets were a tight battle. Neither team could gain momentum to separate themselves from the other. In set one, the Spires held a slim 22-20 lead before Cody Offerle slammed two straight kills to extend it to four and the Warriors were hit with an attacking error to give Saint Mary the first set.
The second set was another challenge for USM. However, a three point swing gave the Spires a 19-14 lead. Cali Odom would earn two consecutive kills and the Spires gained a 2-0 advantage with a 25-19 win.
Set three was all Spires early on. After the Warriors scored the first two points, Anna Hester stepped up with three kills as part of a 13-2 run. Saint Mary led 15-7, but Sterling climbed back midway through and tied the match at 16. Both teams would trade punches with two more ties occurring. But a kill from Hester and Ashley Van Gieson would later solidify the sweep for USM.
Hester led the Spires with 12 kills and Haydan Heuermann had 17 assists. Three different Spires had double-digit digs in Keishla Reyes (15), Jessica Malizzi (14) and Heuermann (13).
