Leavenworth, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team came up short to Southwestern College 69-61 after struggling with foul trouble and from the free-throw line.
The Spires are now 2-8 overall and 1-6 KCAC.
GAME FLOW
After a slow start for both teams, the first bucket came at the seven minute mark of the first quarter. Danielle Cassady went to the bench with two quick fouls and Southwestern capitalized on a couple Saint Mary turnovers, turning their lead to 15-5 at the end of the first quarter. The Spires trailed 35-25 at the end of the first half.
Saint Mary came out with fire in the second half and capitalized off of back to back charges and turnovers by Southwestern, making it a one possession game. Southwestern weathered the storm and extended the lead back to nine. Saint Mary refused to let them pull away, but were unable to come back and pull off the win.
KEY STATISTICS
- Paige Scheckel had nine points and eight rebounds.
- Lexi Schamberger had 13 points and five rebounds.
- Sienna Brown had a double-double with a career-high 17 points along with 11 rebounds.
- Saint Mary forced Southwestern to 24 turnovers.
