MCPHERSON, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary football team closed out their 2018 season with their second straight victory Saturday, this one coming on the road – a 34-20 win against McPherson College.
The Spires end the year with a 4-6 overall record and KCAC mark.
GAME FLOW
The first quarter ended with the first score of the game coming from McPherson as they scored a touchdown. However, their extra point was blocked by Nicholas Holmes as the Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead.
Saint Mary would then score 31 unanswered points over the course of the next two quarters. Demontrel Wilson totaled three straight rushing touchdowns in the second period, to give him 13 for the season. The momentum helped the Spires to a 21-6 lead. He would finish the game with 77 yards on 28 carries. Drew Cortez would add a seven-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Barnhart early in the third quarter, before the Spires tacked on a 23-yard field goal to take a 31-6 lead.
McPherson would add two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late as the Spires held on for the win.
KEY STATISTICS
- Cortez finished with 258 yards and a touchdown.
- Barnhart had a team high 123 yards on nine receptions and a score.
- Holmes had a team leading 11 tackles and his 11th interception of the season.
- David Burton had two of the defense's three sacks on the day.
