Volleyball Handles Friends With 3-1 Win

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary volleyball team has now won three of their last four matches after they defeated Friends University Friday night inside the Ryan Sports Center, 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-17).

The Spires are now 13-10 overall and 4-1 in the KCAC on the season - currently tied for third place with Ottawa University in the conference.

Prior to the match, Katy Koepke was honored for her performance against York College on Wednesday, when she eclipsed 1,000 career digs.

GAME FLOW
Saint Mary jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, led by two kills from Bianca Asheim. The Spires would build on that and take a 17-10 lead, but Friends climbed back and would end up clinching the first set 25-23.

The Spires once again found a rhythm jumping out to an early lead at 10-5, before the Falcons ended up tying the set at 12 later on. Saint Mary would then take a 22-15 advantage after Cody Offerle earned two kills. The Spires would tie the match at one apiece as they took the second set, 25-20.

Saint Mary continued its dominance in the third and fourth sets despite the Falcons keeping it close. In both sets, the Spires would end each on a run. The win gave the Spires their fourth conference victory of the season.

KEY STATISTICS

  • Cali Odom led the Spires with a career-high 17 kills.
  • Ashley Van Gieson tied her season high of 28 assists, while Bailey Wright added 23.
  • Four Spires added double-digit digs in Koepke (25), Wright (18), Angela Wade (18) and Van Gieson (15).
  • Saint Mary posted their second highest total of total blocks with 10 in the match, led by seven block assists from Odom.
