Volleyball Sweeps Peru State in Three Sets

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary volleyball team continued their winning ways, picking up their fourth straight win by defeating Peru State, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 27-25) Tuesday night at the Ryan Sports Center.

The Spires are now 19-11 overall on the season. The 19 wins are the most in program history dating back to before the 2004 season.

GAME FLOW
An 18-12 first set lead after a service ace from Ashley Van Gieson was the beginning of a hot start for the Spires. Peru State would climb back momentarily trailing just 21-18, but the Spires scored four of the next five points including kills from Bianca Asheim and McKenzie Kueker to take the set, 25-19.

The Bobcats would open the second set with a 10-7 lead, but the Spires picked up five straight points to lead 12-10. Both teams would go back and forth until the Spires scored four straight points off errors by Peru State to take a 24-18 lead. Offerle would later end the set with a kill to give the Spires another 25-19 set win and 2-0 match lead.

Peru State would open the third set with a 10-5 lead, but the Spires began to climb back in it to tie the score at 18 later on. Saint Mary would find themselves ahead 24-21 after a kill by Lexi Schamberger, but the Bobcats fought back to tie the score at 24. After an error by each team to draw the score at 25, Cody Offerle and Devyn Colvin each picked up a kill to win the set 27-25 and match.

KEY STATISTICS

  • Offerle totaled a team high 14 kills.
  • Bailey Wright and Van Gieson combined for 34 assists with Wright tallying 19 and Van Gieson recording 15.
  • Wright (16), Katy Koepke (13) and Angela Wade (10) had double-figure digs.
  • Cali Odom and Colvin each had two block assists.

WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SPIRES
Saint Mary will resume KCAC play when they travel to Ottawa University Wednesday evening. Both teams will battle for sole possession of second place in the conference at 7 p.m.
