The Saint Mary women's basketball team took a 73-63 road win at York on Saturday. The Spires are now 8-8 overall and 5-5 in KCAC play. The win moved the Spires into a seventh place tie with McPherson in the KCAC Standings.
The Spires got out to a hot start as they scored the first nine points of the game, but York would not go away easily. The Panthers had the game tied at 11 with 5:44 left in the first quarter, and York would lead by one headed into the second. York led through most of the second quarter, but the Spires used a 12-0 run late to close the second quarter to lead by nine at halftime.
Saint Mary would never trail again in the game, as they took complete control in the second half. The Spires held 14 point leads in the third and fourth quarter before settling for the 10 point victory.
Kelsey Switzer broke out for her best game of the season as she scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Switzer also had three assits. Candy De Los Reyes and Kiera Tate each had 11 points. Ashley Hinkle added nine points and seven assists. Rachel Newquist finished with seven rebounds.
The Spires held York to jus 30% shooting from the field and forced them into 17 turnovers. Saint Mary shot 41% from the field in the win and turned the ball over just 10 times.
The women's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday when they host McPherson at 6pm in the Ryan Sports Center. McPherson is 5-5 in KCAC play and 9-8 on the season.
