The Saint Mary women's basketball team hosted Sterling in the Ryan Sports Center on Wednesday night. The Warriors entered the contest 9-3 in KCAC play and in second place of the conference standings. The Spires upended Sterling 67-63 to avenge their loss to the Warriors on the road earlier this season. Saint Mary is now 9-10 overall and 6-7 in KCAC play to put them in a tie for seventh place with McPherson.
The Spires used a solid start to gain the advantage early in the game. After taking an 8-4 lead in the opening minutes, the Spires led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter. Sterling would have the deficit trimmed to just three points by halftime, however. The Warriors would take a one point lead on a bucket with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter, but the Spires closed the quarter with a two point lead.
In the fourth quarter, Sterling tied the game at 52 before the Spires rattled off an 8-0 ru to take a 60-52 lead. Saint Mary pushed their lead to nine points, but the Warriors would get back within four points at the 3:32 mark. Ashley Hinkle netted a three to give the Spires a seven point lead and they would hold on for the 67-63 win.
Kiera Tate pulled down her season high in rebounds with nine to pace the Spires on the boards. Janae Barnes and Sienna Brown each had six rebounds. Candy De Los Reyes led all scorers with 19 points. Hinkle added 11 points. De Los Reyes also had three steals. Tiani White led the Spires in assists with four.
The Spires will resume play on Saturday with another KCAC home game against Ottawa at 2pm. The Braves are 5-14 overall and 3-10 in KCAC play. Saint Mary topped Ottawa earlier this season in Ottawa by a final score of 68-63.
