Women's Basketball Rally Falls Short in Exhibition Loss

The Saint Mary women's basketball team played an exhibition contest at Rockhurst on Monday night. It was the final tune-up for the Spires before they begin KCAC play later this week.

Saint Mary got out to a slow start and found themselves down 28-9 after the first quarter. The Spires would outscore Rockhurst in each of the final three quarters. After trimming the deficit by five points at halftime, Saint Mary outscored Rockhurst 23-21 in the third and 24-20 in the fourth, but eventually fell by a final of 83-73.

Three Spires scored in double figures in the loss. Candy De Los Reyes had a team high 14 points. Tiani White added 12 points and Kelsey Switzer had 10. Sienna Brown had a team high six rebounds and blocked two shots. Brown also chipped in eight points. De Los Reyes pulled down five rebounds. White led in steals with four. Ashley Hinkle had nine points and three steals.

Saint Mary shot 41% from the field, 17% from three point range, and 74% at the free throw line. The Spires forced 13 steals and blocked three shots. Rockhurst had the edge in rebounds 45-27 over the Saint Mary, but the Spires forced 18 turnovers while turning the ball over just 11 times.

The women's basketball team will open KCAC play on Wednesday when they host Friends at 6pm in the Ryan Sports Center. The Falcons are 2-3 on the season.
