The Saint Mary volleyball team beat Bethany for the second time this season on Monday night in the Ryan Sports Center. The Spires took down the Swedes in straight sets to improve their record to 15-16 overall and 9-11 in KCAC play.
The win puts Saint Mary in a three way tie for sixth place in the conference with Bethany and Sterling. The top eight teams in regular season play will advance to the KCAC Tournament.
The match was tight from the start as the teams went back and forth throughout the first set. Bethany held a 20-19 advantage but the Spires closed the set outscoring the Swedes 6-3 to earn a 25-23 win. The second set was more of the same. Bethany led 24-23, just one point away from taking the set. Saint Mary tied the game on a Swedes service error then took the next two points and won 26-24. In the third set, the teams were tied a 12 each, but the Spires outscored Bethany 13-6 the rest of the way to seal the set and the match.
Kaitlynn Lanier was a nightmare for Bethany at the net as she finished with 14 kills, three solo blocks, and a block assist. Savannah Fillion had 11 kills and one block assist as well. Whitney Rock continued to be solid from the setter position giving Saint Mary 33 assists in the win. Rock also had a team high 25 digs. Angela Wade had 13 digs and added four kills. Bianca Asheim finished with six kills.
The volleyball team will travel to Winfield, Kan. where they will take on Southwestern at 6pm on Wednesday. Southwestern is 3-23 on the season and 1-18 in KCAC play. The Spires bested the Moundbuilders at home earlier this season in straight sets. Saint Mary will return home for their regular season finale on Saturday at 6pm.
