Spires Volleyball Beats Haskell

The Saint Mary volleyball team beat Haskell in four sets in Lawrence on Tuesday night. It was the second time this season the Spires topped Haskell. Saint Mary is now 13-15 on the season. The 13 wins are the most wins since 2008 for the Spires volleyball program.

For the fourth match in a row and the 15th time this season, Savannah Fillion tallied double digit kill totals. This time Fillion posted 14 kills to lead the Spire attack. Angela Wade finished with 13 kills, her season high. Whitney Rock provided 42 assists. It marks the third straight match and sixth total match that Rock has had 40 or more assists.

On the defensive side, Katy Koepke finished one shy of her season high in digs. Koepke had 37 digs in the win. It is the third time this season that Koepke has tallied 30 or more digs in a match. Rock added 23 digs. Alyssa Chung had 17 and Wade finished with 12 digs. Maleka Benjamin had one solo block and one block assist.

The Spires started slowly with Haskell taking the first set 25-15, but the Spires quickly jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the second set before winning 25-19. After trailing early in the third set, the Spires took a 4-3 lead and never trailed again in another 25-19 victory. Saint Mary would dominate the fourth set getting out to a 20-9 lead before sealing the match with a 25-14 win.

Saint Mary will host Oklahoma Wesleyan tonight as they resume KCAC play. Oklahoma Wesleyan is 14-4 in KCAC play. Tonight's match will feature the color pink as the volleyball program raises awareness for breast cancer and raises money for Nikki Gorton, who is battling stage three breast cancer. Gorton was a high school teammate of Head Coach Amy Refenes. Raffles and drawings will be held throughout the night. The match begins at 6pm in the Ryan Sports Center.
